How to select a bridesmaid dress

For many brides selecting a bridesmaid dress can be one of the most challenging tasks throughout the entire wedding process. A lot of brides tend to have an idea of what they really want but are afraid that one of the bridesmaids won’t be happy with their choice or that the dress won’t fit one of the girls properly. Well when you get a group of girls together it is nearly impossible to find something that everyone is in love with, but here are some tips to make things easier on you and your maids.

Money, money, money
Because the bridesmaids typically pay for their dresses try to keep budgets in mind. If budgets are important to you make sure to select a dress in your price range. Don’t try on dresses you can’t afford! It is rude and devalues the product if you select a pricier dress and then beg the boutique for a discount so you can afford the dress. If the bride opts for a pricier dress she may choose to pay for a portion of each dress.

Too many hands in the pot
Avoid bringing the entire bridal party to try on dresses at your first appointment. Bring 1-2 bridesmaids along to help you select a dress. If you choose to bring along the entire bridal party be prepared to receive a wealth of opinions. This always makes selecting a dress much more challenging than it needs to be. Bring 1-2 maids to the first but then schedule a follow-up appointment with the entire bridal party so they can try on the dress you have selected prior to ordering.

Things to consider
Consider the color, style & fabric. Look for colors that will look good on all of your maids. Brighter colors are generally more flattering. Search for a style that flatters different sizes and shapes. A-line skirts and empire waists tend to look good on all body types. Or consider choosing a color/fabric and letting each maid pick a style that suits her. And think about what your maids could do with their dresses after the wedding. (Selecting little black dresses or adding a sweater or belt can make many dresses wearable again!)

How to Decide
In the end you want to select a dress that your maids will adore but at the same time you want something that evokes the overall vision of your wedding & complements your bridal gown. Listen to feedback from your maids but don't ignore what you originally set out to find!

Follow these tips and there is no question that your maids will look amazing and you'll have selected something that complements your wedding style, that your girls will be satisfited with and that they may even wear again!
